Nelson Acoustics
Sound Quality Analyzer

The Nelson Acoustics' Sound Quality Analyzer provides tools for editing, listening and sound quality analysis of standard audio WAV format files. The NAE Sound Quality Analyzer was developed using the National Instruments LabView programming language and is complied to an executable file. The Sound Quality Analyzer is a ready to run application that only requires users to have the free LabView Run Time Engine installed on their system.

The NAE Sound Quality Analyzer accepts as an input any audio file in a WAV format. WAV files recorded using the NAE WAV File Recorder (included with the Sound Quality Analyzer software) can be level calibrated using the normalization level settings established during the recording process. WAV files recorded using other audio cards require the user to establish level calibration by recording reference signals or adjusting the normalization level to match a known sound pressure level.

The NAE Sound Quality Analyzer provides tools for editing and listening to audio WAV files. Files can be edited in both the time and frequency domain while the user listens to the edited result on the fly. The analyzer provides controls that allow the user to clip the WAV file in the time domain, allowing for analysis of individual sections of the file. The Analyzer also provides frequency domain controls that allow users to low, high, band or stop-band pass the signal through a filters of user selectable center frequency, order and bandwidth. The result is a modified WAV file that can be used for on-the-fly aural evaluation or can be saved for listening or analysis at a later data.

In addition to the editing and listening tools, the NAE Sound Quality Analyzer analyzes the WAV file using a variety of acoustical measurement and psychoacoustics metrics.

The NAE Sound Quality Analyzer provides as outputs the following analysis of the WAV file:

  • Power Spectrum Analysis

  • Short Time Fourier Transform Analysis

  • 1/3 Octave Band Level Analysis

  • Waveform Envelope Analysis with weighting (A,B,C) and time constant
    (Fast, Slow, Custom)

  • ISO 532 Overall and Specific Loudness; Diffuse and Free Field

  • Non Stationary Loudness - Spectral and Temporal masking;
Overall and Specific Loudness versus Time

  • Sharpness - Overall and Specific

  • Roughness - Aures method; Overall and Specific

  • Fluctuation Strength - Aures method; Overall and Specific

  • Tonality – Aures method. Coming Q406

  • Modulation – Coming Q406

The NAE Sound Quality Analyzer Demo

The NAE Sound Quality Analyzer Demo is a free, downloadable demonstration version of the NAE Sound Quality Analyzer. It is a fully functional version of the application software that is limited to being able to analyze the WAV files provided with the demo. Users wishing to try the NAE Sound Quality Analyzer on their own WAV files may e-mail several files of interest to info@viacoustics.com. They will be coded to work in the demo version and returned to you via e-mail.
